Note to the SuSE publishers. The permissions on /usr/doc/leda/MANUAL
are WRONG!!!!!!!
Doing a recursive directory entry on that SuSE 5.3 system reveals that
40,000 lines of file names are present!
There are 8 main categories of files in /usr/doc:
- Linux Documentation Project,
- Filesystem Hierarchy Standard,
- Frequently Asked Question lists,
- HOWTO do something papers,
- base documentation from the GNU project on utilities that originate
from there, or are sponsored by the FSF,
- independent package documentation,
- Requests For Comments (RFC) of the Internet Engineering Task
Force (IETF),
- SuSE Support Database.
Of course, your /usr/doc tree might have a slightly different content.
Certainly, if you aren't running SuSE Linux, you won't have a copy of
their support database.
I've supplemented this with a copy of the
"Jargon File".
The assumed knowledge level ranges from the beginner (such as the Getting
Started guide of the LDP) to the expert.
Some require knowledge of specific
computing languages or hardware.
And some are largely fun (such as the
Coffee-HOWTO).
It would be well worthwhile spending a little time browsing some of this
information.
Unfortunately, coming from multiple sources and written in
multiple formats, it isn't necessarily easy to do this.
